Three of the Best… Sporting Artists

Back to Journal

This week, we were privileged to catch up with three of our favourite sporting artists and entrepreneurs, Annie Tempest, Sophie Kirkpatrick and Alice Wingfield Digby, whose busy schedules will make them impossible to miss this summer.

Annie Tempest, Cartoonist

We are huge fans of this Norfolk based artist Annie Tempest whose cartoon ‘Tottering-by-Gently’ features weekly in Country Life. Annie also creates original watercolour cartoons, commissions, signed prints, books & giftware which fondly reflect on life in the country.

You’re set to be as busy as ever this summer – is there a project you’re particularly excited about? I will be working with Quilter Cheviot on an exciting event to be held in the sponsors pavilion at BBC Countryfile Live show at Blenheim Palace, running from 3rd - 6th August, 2017.

Who would you most like to create a cartoon for? I would like to create a cartoon for anybody who would be amused by it!

What is your favourite thing about your Fairfax & Favor Boots? I love my Fairfax and Favour blue suede boots because they go with everything. I have three different pairs of tassels so I can jazz them up differently.

Annie Tempest will exhibiting at the O'Shea Gallery and Chris Beetles Gallery from Wednesday 24th May to Saturday 10th June in St. James's, London. For more information contact lordtottering@hotmail.com.

Sophie Kirkpatrick, Designer and Founder of Atlas & I

Designer Sophie Kirkpatrick uses vintage maps to create her designs, ranging from leather stationery to bespoke silhouette artworks – a commission Sophie created for Fairfax & Favor hangs proudly in our HQ. Her pieces are all beautifully handmade to order in her Wimbledon studio.

You’ve got a packed show schedule this year - what are the items you cannot do without during show season? Throughout the year I exhibit at multiple shows with Atlas & I, to meet new customers and showcase new work. We love the shows but they can be pretty tiring. I will never be seen without my Fairfax and Favor boots though - they keep me sprightly throughout a full day of standing and selling.

What is your favourite thing to do when you’re not working? When I’m not in the studio in London looking at maps I usually be found in a field with my Fairfax and Favor Waterproof Explorer boots. I would never leave London without them!

What are you most excited about for this year? 2017 will be an exciting year for us as we plan on launching a new interactive website where customers can go online and browse our full map collection to choose a map that is unique to them. Alongside this we will be launching a new range to include tea towels and handkerchiefs all printed with our beloved maps.

Atlas & I have just launched their new collection of homeware and gifts, featuring their trademark vintage maps which can be personalised to any location in the world.

Alice Wingfield Digby, Designer and Founder of Wingfield Digby

Wingfield Digby London is a quintessentially English brand, hand-crafting luxury gifts and accessories inspired by nature. Their collection currently includes photo frames, placemats, matchboxes, table centres, wine coasters and artworks, all made from vibrant game bird feathers hand laid under glass.

Tell us how it all started? I am so inspired by how nature can produce such beautiful and intricate patterns that are, more often than not, simply taken for granted. I love the glowing matrix of scales on a fish and the delicate markings on the feathers of a bird; they are like pieces of art. I feel my pieces capture the charm of the English countryside.

What do you love about your Fairfax & Favor Boots? I love how my boots mould to the varied environments I find myself in. Be it beavering away in our London studio or seeking out stray feathers on shoot weekends, they’re always useful!
